Hotels and their Star Ratings - What do they mean?

Stars are often used as symbols for classification purposes. They are used by reviewers for ranking , hotels and resorts

The star classification system is a common one for rating hotels. Higher star ratings indicate more luxury.

Hotels are independently assessed in traditional systems and rest heavily on the facilities provided.

Some consider this disadvantageous to smaller hotels whose quality of accommodation could fall into one class but the lack of an few  item  would prevent it from reaching a higher categorization

Hotels are rated on a scale of 1-5 stars, with one being poor and five being superior. Who assigns these ratings? Unfortunately, in most countries, nobody. Or, to put it another way, everybody. Hotel ratings are like movie or restaurant ratings -- a matter of opinion based on commonly agreed-on values like comfortable beds, safe parking and customer service. The travel industry has simply settled into using the five-star system to rank properties

The advantage of the five-star system is that since most reviews are a star rating, it’s easier to compare and contrast various writers' opinion of the same hotel.

Keep in mind that hotels might only lose stars in a rating because it doesn't provide as many services as the rater expects. A three-star hotel for example might be as clean, with the same number of employees as a five-star hotel, but not have on-site amenities, even though those are available just a short drive from the hotel. It's also important to note that raters use different types of guidelines, which means that while one rater gives a hotel three stars, another rater might give it only one

Five Stars - The highest rating. Only the most luxurious accommodations receive these. The highest standards are met by the staff, and the service is exquisite. These offer the best food, drink, entertainment, and, of course, the best quality accommodation. You will be guaranteed an exceptional stay at any Five Star accommodations.

Four Stars - These accommodations offer very high quality services, and are complete with the most modern of conveniences. You can be sure of a good meal and good entertainment when you stay somewhere that has achieved a Four Star rating.

Three Stars - All three-star accommodation come with private bathroom and are nicely decorated. Restaurants are relaxing and serve a good standard of food. They offer all essential services, and are generally modestly priced. Perfect for the cost-conscious traveler who looks for a good level of comfort.

Two Stars - Two star ratings are usually family-run and are quite charming and very comfortable. Most guest rooms have a telephone and private bathroom. Dining facilities are also usually available
